17-03-2012, 12:00 - 15:00 Open Day: Spring into Action! Sat 17th March

We are holding an open day at the walled garden in Dean Castle Country Park on Saturday 17th March. The theme of the day, ‘Spring Into Action’, aims to encourage members of the local community to take a more active role in the community through involvement with the garden; as well as offering a chance for people to visit the garden and find out more about its operation and the environmental principles it is founded upon.

Members can hire raised beds and grow organic vegetables within the beautiful sheltered location and enjoy the many social and health benefits of community gardening, as well as the financial and environmental aspects of local food production.  Raised beds can be shared with friends and family to spread the cost and share all of the benefits too.

The garden features more than fifty easily-maintained raised beds, a large polytunnel, an abundance of fruit trees as well as a bee hive and pond.  All tools are provided and facilities include a canteen, storage area and composting toilets. Current projects include the restoration of the garden’s original Victorian cold frames and the creation of a parking area for bikes – encouraging members to ditch their cars and get healthy.

With the first buds appearing and the chatter of birds returning, Spring is in the air once again and there is always plenty to do to help maintain the half acre plot, so volunteers are always welcome. Experienced gardeners are also required to assist with teaching members and local community groups, which would ideally suit retired people wishing to keep active and invest a little of their time and experience in the local community.

The group has ambitious plans for the future and hopes to include local people in the realisation of these projects. For further info call garden manager Sallie Sillars 07934 390133 or Heal the Earth chairperson Jan Sinclair 01563 520904, or head along to the open day on March 17th from 12pm to 3pm. Please note – there is only limited disabled parking at the garden and visitors are advised to use the nearby Assloss Bridge car park.
